Figurative Language

Good authors use figurative language to help "paint the picture" of the action in the book. Figurative language lets the reader use his or her imagination to discover the author's descriptions.

You can find figurative language in many different types of writing. Check out this poem by Eve Merriam

Silence by Eve Merriam

Quiet

So quiet

Without a sound

Floating

Falling

To the ground

Snowflake feathers

From snow white birds

Snow is a poem

Without any words.

What are some types of figurative language in this poem?  Why did the author use figurative language?  How do you know she use figurative language?

  1. Snowflake feathers ffrom snow white birds is a type of figurative languege. The auther used figuritve language so you can imagine the pictures easily. I know she used figurative language because there are no snowflake feathers.

  2. These are some examples as figurative language snow white birds and snow white feathers. The author said it like this,"Snow white feathers from snow white birds". The author used figuative language to make it easier to picture the poem in your mind and she used it to describe two nouns. Here is an example of figurative language that is not from the poem, When the lady walked in the classroom, she was as quite as a mouse.

  4. "Snowflake feathers", "snow white birds", and "Snow is a poem" are types of figurative language in this poem. The author uses figurative language because she wants the reader to imagine her view of silence. I know she uses figurative language because she compares snowflakes to feathers, snow to white birds, and snow to a poem.
